Medical Treatments

Adenoidectomy
  • Adenoids are small glands in the upper airway behind the nose. They are part of the body's immune system and help protect against germs that enter through the mouth and nose. They also produce antibodies or white blood cells to fight infections.
  • However, when these glands become problematic, a procedure called an adenoidectomy, or adenoid removal, can be performed to remove them. This surgery is often done alongside a tonsillectomy, which removes the tonsils. Both adenoids and tonsils can get swollen or infected due to frequent throat and respiratory infections.
  • While adenoids are important early in life, they usually shrink and may disappear as a person ages, often during adolescence.
Signs & Symptoms

When adenoids become swollen or infected, they can lead to several symptoms, especially in children:

  • Mouth breathing due to a blocked nasal airway.
  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep.
  • Sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep).
  • Frequent ear infections.
  • Sinus infections.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Persistent runny or stuffy nose.
Causes

Several factors can lead to the enlargement or infection of adenoids:

  • Frequent Infections: Recurring throat or ear infections can cause adenoids to become swollen.
  • Allergic Reactions: Allergies can trigger inflammation.
  • Genetic Factors: Some children have naturally larger adenoids.
  • Immune Response: Adenoids play a role in fighting infections; overactivity can cause swelling.
When to seek medical attention?

Seek medical attention if you notice the following:

  • Persistent symptoms like mouth breathing, snoring, or difficulty breathing
  • Frequent infections that do not improve with medication
  • Sleep disturbances or daytime fatigue in children, which may indicate sleep apnea
  • Delayed growth or learning issues, which may result from poor sleep quality
Diagnostics & Tests

Doctors use several tests to assess the size and condition of the adenoids:

  • Physical Exam: Visual examination of the throat and nose.
  • X-rays: Imaging to assess the size of the adenoids.
  • Endoscopy: A flexible tube with a camera examines the adenoids and nasal passages.
  • Sleep Study: Evaluates the presence of sleep apnea, especially if the child snores or has sleep issues.
Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Stay hydrated to help with healing.
  • Eat soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and soups during the first few days.
  • Get plenty of rest to speed up recovery.
  • Take prescribed medications as directed for pain relief and infection prevention.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid strenuous activities like sports for at least two weeks.
  • Don’t eat hard or spicy foods as they can irritate the throat.
  • Avoid smoking or secondhand smoke, which can slow down healing.
  • Avoid crowded places to reduce exposure to infections during recovery.
