Medical Treatments

Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)

Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat liver cancer. It involves delivering chemotherapy drugs directly to the liver tumor while blocking the blood supply to the cancer, causing it to shrink. TACE combines the targeted delivery of chemotherapy with embolization (blocking the artery) to enhance treatment effectiveness and minimize side effects.

Signs & Symptoms

Before undergoing TACE, patients typically present with signs and symptoms of liver cancer, such as:

  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort.
  • Swelling or fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites).
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Fatigue and general weakness.
Causes

Liver cancer can develop due to various factors, including:

  • Chronic infection with hepatitis B or C virus.
  • Cirrhosis, often due to long-term alcohol abuse or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Genetic disorders, such as hemochromatosis or Wilson's disease.
  • Exposure to aflatoxins, toxins produced by moldy crops.
  • Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
When to seek medical attention?

Immediate medical attention should be sought if any of the following occurs:

  • Persistent and severe abdominal pain.
  • Significant, unexplained weight loss.
  • Jaundice or changes in skin color.
  • Severe fatigue impacts daily life.
  • Rapid abdominal swelling.
Diagnostics & Tests

To determine if TACE is an appropriate treatment, several diagnostic tests are performed:

  • Imaging tests, such as CT scans or MRI, to assess the size and location of liver tumors.
  • Blood tests include liver function and tumor marker tests (e.g., alpha-fetoprotein).
  • Biopsy, in some cases, to confirm the type of liver cancer.
  • Angiography, an imaging technique to view blood vessels and plan for TACE.
Do’s & Don’ts

Do's:

  • Rest adequately after the procedure and limit physical activity for a few days.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet to aid recovery.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions for any prescribed medications.
  • Attend follow-up appointments and imaging tests as scheduled.

 Don'ts:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least a week.
  • Do not skip follow-up visits, as these are crucial for monitoring progress.
  • Refrain from alcohol consumption, as it can strain the liver.
  • Avoid smoking, which can impair healing and overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions For Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)

Due to sedation and local anesthesia, TACE is generally not painful during the procedure. Some discomfort or mild pain may be experienced afterward, but it can be managed with prescribed painkillers.

The number of sessions varies depending on the tumor size, number, and location. Some patients may require multiple treatments over several months.

TACE is not typically a cure but is used to shrink tumors, control cancer growth, and extend survival. It can also be a bridge to liver transplantation or used in combination with other treatments.

Common side effects include fever, fatigue, nausea, and mild abdominal pain. Rarely, more severe complications such as infection or liver failure may occur.

Most patients recover within a few days, but fatigue and mild pain can persist for up to a week. Complete recovery may take a few weeks.
