Heart Bypass Surgery (CABG)

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a procedure used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). It involves bypassing blocked or narrowed coronary arteries by grafting healthy vessels, usually from the patient's leg, arm, or chest, to restore blood flow to the heart. CAD is caused by a buildup of fatty material within the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the inside of the arteries, limiting the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of coronary artery disease may include:

  • Chest pain.
  • Fatigue (severe tiredness).
  • Palpitations.
  • Abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Swelling in the hands and feet.
  • Indigestion.
Causes

Several key risk factors contribute to cardiovascular disease:

  • High cholesterol levels.
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Smoking.
  • Diabetes.
  • Obesity.
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Poor diet (high in saturated fats, trans fats, and sugar).
When to seek medical attention?

Immediate medical attention is required if you experience:

  • Severe chest pain or discomfort that radiates to the arm, neck, or jaw.
  • Shortness of breath that is sudden and unrelieved by rest.
  • Dizziness, fainting, or a rapid/irregular heartbeat.
  • Symptoms resembling those of a heart attack, such as chest pain that persists for more than a few minutes.
Diagnostics & Tests

Some common diagnostic tools used to assess heart health and detect potential issues:

  • Coronary Angiography: Uses contrast dye and X-rays to visualize blockages in the coronary arteries.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG): Measures the heart's electrical activity.
  • Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart to check for structural issues.
  • Stress test: Monitors the heart's activity during physical exertion.
  • Blood tests: To check for electrolyte imbalances or other contributing factors.
Do’s & Don’ts

 Do's

  • Follow-up care.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions regarding medications to prevent clot formation and manage blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Healthy diet: Consume a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
  • Stay active: Engage in light physical activity as your doctor recommends (cardiac rehabilitation may be suggested).
  • Monitor symptoms:  Watch for any recurrence of chest pain, shortness of breath, or other symptoms.
  • Take medications as prescribed.

 Don'ts

  • Don't smoke or drink alcohol excessively.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or intense physical activity for the first few weeks post-surgery.
  • Don't skip medications or alter your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Don't consume foods high in saturated fats, trans fats, or salt.

Frequently Asked Questions For Heart Bypass Surgery (CABG)

Light activities can resume after 4-6 weeks, while more strenuous activities may take up to 12 weeks or more, based on your doctor's advice.

Recovery usually takes 6-12 weeks, depending on the patient's overall health and the type of surgery performed.

Some complications include infection, bleeding, arrhythmias, and, in rare cases, heart attack or stroke. CABG surgery is a well-established procedure that has saved millions of lives by restoring heart function and relieving the symptoms of coronary artery disease.

Bypass grafts typically last 10-15 years. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can extend the graft's longevity.

CABG does not cure coronary artery disease but improves blood flow to the heart, alleviating symptoms and reducing the risk of a heart attack.
