Heart Valve Replacement

Heart valve replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged heart valve is replaced with an artificial (prosthetic) valve. It is performed when a valve is severely damaged and cannot regulate blood flow efficiently, leading to life-threatening complications. The heart has four valves: aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary, and any of these can be replaced.

Signs & Symptoms

People with heart valve disease may experience:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • Chest pain, especially during exertion.
  • Swelling in the ankles, feet, or abdomen.
  • Irregular heartbeat or palpitations.
  • Dizziness or fainting.

If you experience these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider to evaluate your heart health.

Causes

Heart valve disease can result from:

  • Aging: Natural wear and tear can lead to valve stiffening or leakage.
  • Congenital Defects: Some people are born with malformed valves.
  • Rheumatic Fever: A bacterial infection that can cause permanent valve damage.
  • Endocarditis: An infection in the heart lining, often damaging the valves.
  • Other Conditions: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and previous heart attacks can weaken or damage heart valves.
When to seek medical attention?

Early detection is crucial to manage heart valve disease effectively. Contact a healthcare provider if you notice persistent:

  • Persistent chest pain.
  • Breathlessness, especially while lying flat or during exertion.
  • Fainting spells or dizziness.
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Unexplained swelling in legs or feet.
  • Difficulty recovering from routine physical activity.
Diagnostics & Tests

Healthcare providers can use several diagnostic tests to assess valve function:

  • Echocardiogram: To visualize the heart's valves and chambers and evaluate valve function.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): To detect abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Chest X-ray: To observe the size of the heart and check for fluid buildup in the lungs.
  • Cardiac catheterization: To measure pressure inside heart chambers and assess blood flow.
  • CT or MRI scans: To get detailed images of heart structures.
  • Stress test: To evaluate heart function during physical exertion.
Do’s & Don’ts

 Do's:

  • Follow a heart-healthy diet low in salt, cholesterol, and trans fats.
  • Take prescribed medications regularly (e.g., blood thinners, anticoagulants).
  • Engage in moderate exercise as your doctor recommends (walking, swimming, etc.).
  • Monitor and control blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Report any new symptoms (e.g., fever, swelling, shortness of breath) to your doctor.
  • Attend regular follow-up appointments to monitor heart health and valve function.

 Don'ts:

  • Don't ignore signs of infection (fever, chills), which can lead to endocarditis (valve infection).
  • Don't engage in heavy lifting or strenuous activities right after surgery.
  • Avoid smoking or passive smoking, which can strain the heart.
  • Don't skip medications such as anticoagulants (blood thinners), especially if you have a mechanical valve.
  • Avoid high-sodium foods that can increase fluid retention and blood pressure.
