Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) closure is a surgical procedure to fix a hole in the wall (septum) between the heart’s lower chambers (ventricles). This hole allows blood to pass from the left to the right ventricle, causing the heart and lungs to work harder.

Signs & Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of VSD can vary depending on the size of the defect and the child’s age. While small VSDs might not produce any symptoms, more significant defects can show more severe signs.

  • Breathing difficulties (especially during feeding).
  • Rapid heartbeat.
  • Frequent respiratory infections.
  • Poor weight gain or failure to thrive.
  • Sweating while eating or playing.
  • Heart murmur (a distinctive whooshing sound heard with a stethoscope).
Causes

There’s no single known cause, several factors might increase the likelihood:

  • Genetic factors: VSD often appears in families with a history of congenital heart defects.
  • Environmental factors: Certain medications, alcohol, or infections (like rubella) during pregnancy may increase risk.
When to seek medical attention?

If you notice any of the above symptoms, especially in babies or young children, consult a doctor. VSDs can lead to serious heart and lung complications if left untreated.

Diagnostics & Tests

Several tests help confirm VSD, including:

  • Physical exam: Detecting heart murmurs through stethoscopes.
  • Echocardiogram (Echo): Uses sound waves to visualize the heart structure and measure blood flow.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): Records the heart’s electrical signals to assess rhythm and function.
  • Chest X-ray: Shows heart size, structure, and lung condition.
  • Cardiac catheterization: Occasionally used to understand the severity of the defect.
Do’s & Don’ts

 Do’s:

  • Follow medical advice: Regular check-ups and following a doctor’s advice are crucial.
  • Prioritize a balanced diet: Helps support overall health and heart function.
  • Monitor growth and development: Track weight gain and developmental milestones.
  • Practice good dental hygiene: Helps prevent bacterial infections affecting the heart.

 Don’ts:

  • Don’t skip medications: If prescribed, continue with heart medications as directed.
  • Avoid tobacco smoke exposure: Second-hand smoke can strain a child’s heart and lungs.
  • Don’t delay vaccinations: Immunizations can prevent infections that could complicate VSD.
