Blood Clot Brain Surgery

Blood clot brain surgery is a procedure used to treat blood clots that form in the brain. These clots can block blood flow and cause serious problems, such as strokes or brain damage. The surgery aims to remove or break down the clot to restore normal blood circulation in the brain.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the scalp and opens the skull to access the brain. They carefully locate the clot and remove it using special instruments. Sometimes, they might use a " thrombectomy " technique to suction out the clot.
After removing the clot, the surgeon will close the incision and monitor the patient's recovery. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia so the patient is asleep and does not feel pain.
The recovery process can vary depending on the size and location of the clot and the patient's overall health. Patients may need to stay in the hospital for monitoring and rehabilitation for  for a few days or weeks.
Physical therapy and other forms of rehabilitation may be required to help the patient regain full function. Regular follow-up appointments are important to ensure the brain is healing properly and check for any complications.

Signs & Symptoms

Blood clots in the brain can lead to conditions like a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Symptoms may include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, often on one side of the body.
  • Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech.
  • Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination.
  • Severe headache with no known cause.
  • Sudden loss of consciousness or fainting.
Causes

Blood clots in the brain can be caused by:

  • Atherosclerosis: Hardening or narrowing arteries due to cholesterol and fat buildup.
  • Heart conditions include atrial fibrillation, where the heart's irregular rhythm can lead to clot formation.
  • Stroke: A type of stroke where a blood clot blocks blood flow to parts of the brain.
  • Trauma: Head injury leading to blood clot formation.

When to seek medical attention?

Diagnostics & Tests

Doctors use several tests to diagnose and assess blood clots in the brain:

  • CT Scan (Computed Tomography): Helps identify bleeding or clots in the brain.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Provides detailed images of brain tissues to detect clots.
  • Ultrasound: Used to check for clots in other parts of the body, like the neck or legs.
  • Blood tests: To check for clotting disorders or other related conditions.
