What is HoLEP?
Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. This advanced laser treatment helps remove excess prostate tissue to relieve urinary symptoms associated with BPH. HoLEP is particularly beneficial for men with significantly enlarged prostates, as it removes obstructive tissue with precision, minimizes bleeding, and offers a shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgeries.

Signs & Symptoms

The main reason for undergoing HoLEP is BPH. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of BPH can help with early detection and timely treatment.

Frequent Urination: Increased frequency, especially at night.
Difficulty Starting Urination: Also known as hesitancy, where the patient finds it hard to initiate urination.
Weak Urine Stream: A reduced flow or weak urine stream is a common complaint.
Incomplete Bladder Emptying: A feeling of not fully emptying the Bladder.
Intermittency: The urine stream may stop and start repeatedly.

Causes

Though the exact cause of BPH remains unknown, several factors contribute:

Age: BPH commonly affects men over 50 years old.
Hormonal Changes: With age, changes in testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels contribute to prostate enlargement.
Family History: Men with a family history of BPH are more prone to developing the condition.
