David Otieno Returns to Home Country Uganda after a Successful Knee Replacement Surgery in India at Fortis Hospital
David Otieno, a 62-year-old gentleman from Uganda, had been suffering from severe osteoarthritis in his right knee for over eight years. Initially managed with medications, physiotherapy, and lifestyle modifications, the condition gradually worsened, severely limiting his mobility and quality of life.
“I used to love walking around my garden and visiting the local market, but the pain got so bad that even standing up from a chair became a challenge,” David recalled. Despite numerous treatments and consultations in Kampala, he found little long-term relief.
Eventually, his orthopedic specialist in Uganda suggested considering total knee replacement surgery and referred him to India, a country recognized globally for its advancements in joint replacement procedures. While researching reputable medical tourism facilitators online, David came across VivaVel. “I had read several positive testimonials about VivaVel and even heard from a friend who had a successful hip replacement in India through them,” he shared.
Upon reaching out to VivaVel, David was connected with a dedicated case manager who provided comprehensive guidance, from hospital selection to visa assistance. After evaluating several options, David chose Artemis Hospital in Gurgaon for its renowned orthopedic department and state-of-the-art facilities.
He arrived in India on July 15th, where he underwent a thorough evaluation, including blood work, X-rays, and physical assessments. He was soon introduced to Dr. IPS Oberoi, a leading orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement. “Dr. Oberoi explained everything clearly and patiently, and after reviewing the scans, he confirmed that knee replacement was the best option for me,” said David.
The surgery was performed successfully, and within a day, David began light physiotherapy. “Each day, I could feel improvement—not just in the knee but in my confidence,” he said. During his hospital stay, he received personalized care, physical therapy, and detailed guidance on postoperative recovery.
“I was walking short distances with assistance within three days, and by the sixth day, I was more independent than I’d been in months,” he said. Discharged a week after the surgery, David spent a few more days in a nearby recovery facility to complete his initial rehab.
Reflecting on his two-week stay in India, David said, “The warmth and hospitality of everyone—from my surgeon to the hospital staff to the VivaVel team—made a big difference. The food took some getting used to, but the overall experience exceeded my expectations.”
Before heading back to Uganda, David shared his appreciation: “I’m truly grateful to VivaVel. Their support throughout this journey was invaluable. I will recommend them to anyone in Uganda considering medical care abroad.”
VivaVel extends its best wishes to David Otieno for a smooth recovery and a healthy, active life ahead.
